Sir, – May I wish Johnny Watterson all the best in his future life as he tells us in today’s Irish Times (June 19th) that he is signing off as a columnist. I have enjoyed his writing over the years and especially his ability to give interesting insight and information on any sport that he covered.
Outside of sport, he wrote some years ago about the tragic death of his brother, his only sibling, who was killed in the Troubles by a stray bullet on the Falls Road where he lived. The gunman has never been identified.
He spoke with immense courage and humanity of the effect of this tragedy on his parents and himself. I will never forget it. – Yours, etc,
ADRIAN HONAN,
