The President has paid tribute to the medical profession for its service in the North during the Troubles. During a one day visit to the North, Mrs McAleese told the Ulster Medical Society's annual presidential dinner that because of the demands placed on doctors in the past 30 years, they still enjoyed a high level of public confidence and trust. Mrs McAleese also visited a community centre in east Belfast, a school in west Belfast and a senior citizens' centre in Newry.
