The boards of eircom and Valentia have announced the appointment of Dr Philip Nolan as chief executive of eircom.

Dr Nolan (48) will succeed Mr Alfie Kane and will take up his position on January 2nd, 2002.

Dr Nolan was born in Enniskillen and graduated from Queens University, Belfast, with a BSc and a PhD in Geology. He also has an MBA from the London Business School.

He has spent much of his business career outside Ireland and is currently chief executive of British gas distributor Lattice Group.

Lattice said Dr Nolan would resign as chief executive to take up the eircom post.

The move follows last week's decision by Mr Kane to stand down as chief executive of eircom.
