Tehran - Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has decided to allow abortions when embryos are deformed, easing restrictions in place since Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution, a medical expert was quoted as saying yesterday by Azad newspaper.

Iran has under its Islamic law imposed penalties on illegal abortions and has so far allowed abortions only if the life of the mother was at risk.
