BRUSSELS yesterday held out new hope to Ireland's beleaguered beef producers with a promise from the EU Commission to look at a scheme specially targeted to take up to 20,000 tonnes of beef off the Irish market.

Recognising the short-term crisis facing the Irish beef market, the EU Farm Commissioner, Mr Franz Fischler, promised to give serious consideration to special storage subsidies for Irish meat factories.
